Breakout Sessions: Inclusive & Diverse Workforce
Reframe your mindset from questioning your ability ("What can I do?") to affirming your potential ("What I
can do!") - this shift in perspective is fundamental to recognizing your power to create change. Transform
from a passive observer to an inclusive change-maker by changing how we view power and responsibility.
By engaging in Simply Good Form’s Inclusion’s The Power of Normal, participants will:
- Understand what ‘normalization’ really means, and why it’s an effective tool for large-scale change, as it
applies to equity and inclusion in the workplace. - Recognize different approaches to inclusion work, and choose the right approach for your goals.
- Link our idea of ‘normal’ to how each of us carries our power.
- Be able to leverage power, even if we have very little, to make effective progress towards inclusive spaces.
Speakers: Cynthia Sweeney & Emma Stanley
Room: Kenneth C. Rowe Hall
Another day another IDEA workshop, right? Here’s a fresh take: let’s look at inclusivity, diversity, equity, and
accessibility through the lens of the language we use in the workplace. Whose responsibility is clear
communication? What happens when you change how you communicate with your newcomer employees?
This practical, hands-on workshop will leave you with a shift in perspective and some top tweaks to your
speaking and writing that you can start using right away.
Speaker: Arleigh Hood
Room: Windsor Foundation Classroom
Nova Scotia is experiencing an increasing number of adults retiring, with certain sectors and occupations
being harder hit. This has direct implications for the labour force, the economy and our health and social
systems. Extending the working lives of older adults is a way to retain skills in the labour force as well as
promote the health and well-being of older Nova Scotians. There are, however, challenges to engaging and
retaining older workers. This session will address several myths and draw on insights from a Nova Scotia
project on older workers to identify barriers to, and, strategies for, supporting the retention and re-
engagement of older adults.
